About Me

It’s a Great Day for Science!  Welcome to the AVA.  I am Ms. Marjorie Thomas and I will be your science teacher this school year. This will be my 22nd year teaching science in both the middle school and high school arenas.  I was born and raised in Atlanta, Georgia and I’m proud to say that all of my 22 years of teaching have been with the Clayton County Public School System. I have a Bachelor's Degree in Middle Grades Education (Math & Science) from Brenau University; a Master's Degree in Curriculum and Instruction and an Educational Specialist Degree in Educational Leadership from Central Michigan University.  I am also a certified gifted teacher. I reside in Clayton County and I have a cat named Jeezy that is the apple of my eye. I enjoy reading, hiking and meditating.

Science is important because it is all around us and influences many aspects of our daily lives.   Advances in medicine, technology and numerous other fields could not be possible without science.  If it weren’t  for science, we wouldn’t have many of the products we use today, life-saving medicine and equipment, and so much more.

Being scientifically literate allows students to understand the complex world we live in, and also allows them to think critically.  In addition, becoming familiar with the scientific method early on can help students develop skills that allow them to become better learners in a number of other subjects.  These skills include asking the right questions, doing research, analyzing information, and more.

I teach 7th grade Life Science and 8th Grade Physical Science.

Our life science curriculum teaches students a number of important concepts pertaining to cells  and heredity, the five kingdoms, human body systems, and ecology.  Students will start the year by going over various principles crucial to any science study including scientific inquiry, hypotheses and analyzing data.

Our physical science curriculum will provide an overview of scientific principles and procedures, and lead students toward a clearer understanding of matter, energy and the physical universe.  It focuses on traditional concepts in chemistry and physics, and encourages exploration of new discoveries in this field of science.

Students will participate in a blended learning environment during the school year; however, initially they will be completing their school work online due to unforeseen circumstances. The online program is called Edgenuity.

Edgenuity offers standards-aligned video-based curriculum for middle and high school blended learning environments. The program allows educators to customize the curriculum for their students, who monitor their own progress while completing lessons, assessments, and interactive activities.

Please feel free to reach out to me

Respectfully,

Ms. Thomas
